Pack 449 Pinewood Derby

This year’s theme is “The Johns Creek 500”
This year’s Pinewood Derby will be as exciting as ever.
We invite Scouts, Leaders, Siblings and Parents to attend and create a
car for our Pinewood Derby. Here are the specifics:
-Date: Friday, Feb 24th 5:30-8:00PM (Registration) and Saturday Feb 25th
9-Noon (Races)
-Cost: $10 per car registered. You can pre-register via the attached
form. Just fill it out and email to bwarren@rstwarren.com prior to Thurs.
Feb. 23rd. You can pay when you bring your car in Friday, Feb. 24th
-Extra Car Kits are $5, get them from your Den Leader or email Bob Warren
@ bwarren@rstwarren.com.
-We’ll have Donuts, Coffee, Sodas, Water and Snacks the day of the races

9:30 - Wolf Races
10:00 - Bear Races
10:30 - Webelos Races
11:00 – Unlimited (siblings, leaders, parents, old scout cars, etc) Cars
with no rules, just keep it within the confines of the track specs please
11:30 – Design Awards Presentations
11:45 - Finals
ALL TIMES ARE APPROXIMATE. CARS MAY BE PICKED UP AT THE FINAL RACES ON
SATURDAY. PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT YOUR FELLOW SCOUTS THROUGHOUT THE MORNING.
Each of the classes will be awarded based on speed performance. Speed
winners will be determined by the average time of three races, once down
each lane. The results of all the heats will determine the speed winners
for each rank. The top three in each rank will go on to race in the Finals.
There will be awards in each rank for the following categories:
Fastest overall
Most Scout-like
Best Theme
Weigh-in is Friday, February 24 from 5:30 PM - 9:00 PM. NO CARS CAN BE
REGISTERED AFTER 9:00 PM. Any and all modifications/repairs must be done
before the car is officially registered and impounded. Once your car is
accepted it will be impounded and cannot be returned until after the races
on Saturday the 25th.
Construction Rules
Cars must be made from an official Boy Scouts of America Pinewood Derby
Car kit. Cars must also meet the following:
Width not to exceed 2 ¾"
Length not to exceed 7"
Height not to exceed 6"
At least 3/8" clearance under the car.
With the car sitting on a table, the nose of the car must be less than
1" above the table.
At least 1¾" between the wheels (measured at the tread, not
the hub), so it fits over the guide bar.
Weight not to exceed 142 grams (5.0 ounces).
Only official BSA wheels and axles may be used.
The profile of the wheels can be modified, but only official BSA wheels
may be used.
No bearings, washers, bushings, or springs.
No liquid or loose parts (other than the wheels).
The car must be totally freewheeling and propelled solely by gravity.
Use of original axle slots is not mandatory, but the car and wheels must
meet size restrictions.
The chassis of the car must be wood, but additional details or parts made
of other materials can be added to the cars.
We are always looking for volunteers to assist with the Pinewood Derby.
General assignments for the Pinewood Derby are as follows:
Tigers – Setup (putting up decorations, setting up track tables, etc.)
Wolves – Takedown (taking everything down after the race, helping to
transport for storage, etc.)
Bears - Registration (registering cars, entering info into Derby Master,
weighing, judging cars)
Webelos I – Concessions
Webelos II – Pit Crew
Each group’s Den Leaders will be contacted about the specifics of their
